SUNBURNS: Everything you need to know + Natural remedies

Summer is coming and the desire to discover ourselves and sunbathe certainly makes us cheerful and happy, but we must be careful not to burn our skin, causing damage and even very serious trauma.

WHAT ARE SUNBURNS?

Sunburn is a skin lesion, caused when the ultraviolet (UV) rays of sunlight damage DNA in the upper layer of skin cells. The sun emits three kinds of UV radiation – UVA, B and C.
UVC is mostly absorbed by the earth’s atmosphere, but UVA and UVB rays reach the ground and can invade unprotected skin. UVB penetrates the epidermis, the top layer of the skin, while UVA goes deeper to dermis and hypodermis. Be cautious with long, intense, unprotected or superficially protection exposure to UV rays.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF SUNBURN?

Recognizing a sunburn is quite simple and if you notice any of these symptoms, immediately run for cover, taking care of it in the best possible way.
• Red skin, which can also become purplish.
• Hot and itchy skin.
• Bubbles, blisters, skin edema and scaling may appear.
• Burning and pain of the affected part.
• In severe cases, fever and chills may occur.

WHAT HAPPENS WITH THE SKIN ONCE OVEREXPOSED TO SUN?

When the skin is ultra-exposed to ultraviolet radiation, there can be long-term reactions such as photo aging of the skin with collagen damage, dark spots formation and in the worst cases skin cancers. In this article, however, we will focus on short-term damage, those caused by UVB.
And what are they?

• Sun erythema: the heat of the sun causes a dilation of the superficial blood vessels, which by swelling crush the nerve endings causing irritation. It usually occurs a few hours after sun exposure and reaches its peak no later than 24 hours later. You have to be extremely careful because you can get burned even on cloudy days under the umbrella.

• Hives (sun dermatitis): solar dermatitis is caused by a real allergy to radiation, causing redness, edema, spots and severe itching.

WHY DOES THE SKIN PEEL AFTER SUNBURNS?

When the skin gets burned after a long exposure to the sun, a large amount of skin cells are damaged and consequently must be removed and renewed. When peeling occurs, small pieces of skin form that peel off and this process can become painful due to the burn in progress.
To prevent flaking, it is necessary not to expose yourself to the sun yet and try to relieve the pain it causes, maintaining a high level of hydration and nourishment, both with topical products and by acting from the inside.

HOW LONG IT TAKES SKIN TO HEAL?

Skin healing after a sunburn depends a lot on the severity of the burn. It can take anywhere from 3 days up to 20 days. If the sunburn is mild and the skin is red and swollen, it can take up to a week, on the other hand, if it is very red and there are blisters, it may take up to two weeks.

OPS ... I'M SUNBURNED! WHAT SHOULD YOU DO NEXT TO TAKE CARE OF MY SKIN?

If the burn is very serious, the advice is to consult a doctor immediately; if it is of medium-mild severity, here are the tips to keep in mind to relieve your sunburn:

1. Do not expose yourself to the sun until completely healed, stay in the shade and protect your skin with a high-protection sunscreen.

2. Cool down the affected area with cold water packs, cold baths and showers to help the temperature drop.

3. Due to the burn, the skin loses its normal hydration, and it is essential to supplement the lost water with the use of soothing and moisturizing creams, perfect those containing oats and aloe. (See below for some amazing homemade remedies!)

4. If the erythema is more severe, consult a doctor!

5. If skin blisters appear, do not squeeze them. The presence of blisters means that you have a second degree burn and the blisters protect your skin from infection. Let them heal.

6. After showering or bathing, be careful not to rub the skin, but gently pat dry.

7. Wear light clothing made of natural fibers to create less rubbing and irritation, avoid tight clothing that creates friction with the skin.

8. Drink lots of water and eat lots of fruit and vegetables rich in vitamin C, to counteract the formation of free radicals that cause premature skin aging; coconut water is highly recommended for its refreshing properties.
